Endovenous Laser Treatment For Varicose Veins

General anesthesia, surgery, a hospital stay of several days – all gone. Today, Endovenous Laser Treatment has not only put an end to varicose veins, but also the surgery that was required in the past to treat them.

With EVLT, the faulty vein is literally closed down. As the blood naturally finds other, healthy veins through which it can flow, circulation in the leg improves, and the pain and swelling associated with varicose veins is reduced.

Prior to your procedure, an ultrasound is utilized to map your leg's venous system. The map is then carefully drawn onto the skin and a local anesthetic is topically applied. Next, an amazingly thin fiber-optic strand is inserted through a micro entry point, usually at the mid-to-upper thigh area. Following the map, the strand is guided along the length of the problem vein.

Finally, the laser is activated, and the strand is slowly withdrawn, distributing energy from the laser along the length of the varicose vein. Heat from the laser causes the vein to shrink, eventually, closing off entirely. In time, the body will naturally absorb the tissue from the disabled vein and blood will naturally re-route to healthy veins.

After the approximately 45 minute laser treatment, your leg will be wrapped in a compression dressing which you will be required to wear for a couple of weeks. Although you can resume normal activities immediately – walking is even encouraged – it is recommended that you avoid strenuous activities such as high-impact aerobics in the first few weeks following your procedure.

The benefits of EVLT can last for years. Although you should not expect to realize the full benefits of your laser treatment until around months 10 to 12, a noticeable improvement is seen immediately. As with any medical procedure, there are risks associated with EVLT, but they are far less than those of traditional surgical alternatives.
